Sculptra Treatment is an injectable filler for cosmetic use. Until recently, Scupltra was approved only for use in HIV positive patients who had lost significant amounts of facial fat due to the disease. There are several key differences between Sculptra Aesthetic and other popular dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm. First, Sculptra is meant to fill in larger, more diffuse areas of the face (as opposed to being injected specifically into a line or wrinkle). Second, the results seen with Sculptra develop over time instead of providing immediate gratification.
The upside of this particular feature is that the results are also longer lasting. (In a 25-month clinical trial, results were still apparent at the end of the 25-month period studied.) Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid-based filler, and is meant to be injected in a series of up to 4 treatments, spaced at least 3 weeks apart. Other adverse events reported include small bumps and lumps, with most side effects resolving on their own.
With the liquid face lift quickly becoming the most popular comprehensive anti-aging procedure, the approval of Sculptra could be game-changing. I think that the pendulum has swung too far towards all these cosmetic procedures where the younger dermatologists are just doing cosmetic procedures and not listening to their patients. This is an important point because if the Dermatologist does not spend enough time with the patient during the consult the cosmetic procedures will probably not work.
