HPV and Genital Warts (Condylomata)

  • Types of HPV: There are over 80 types of HPV, with 20 affecting the genital area.
  • Prevalence: Approximately 75% of sexually active adults have been infected with genital HPV.
  • Symptoms: Genital warts, or condylomata acuminata, are lesions in the genital, perineal, and anal areas caused by HPV types 6 and 11.

Causes and Transmission

  • Incubation Period: HPV can incubate for up to eight months.
  • Infection Rate: Most HPV infections clear within 2 years without symptoms.
  • Transmission: Genital warts, or condylomata, are highly contagious and can be transmitted even without visible symptoms.

Diagnosis and Symptoms

  • Signs: Genital warts may cause itching and are often self-detected. Internal warts may cause discharge or discomfort.
  • Appearance: Warts are small, warty lumps that may be browner than the surrounding skin.
  • Diagnosis: Usually based on appearance; biopsy may be needed if uncertain.

Treatment Options

  • Pregnancy Considerations: Treatment should be cautious, especially in the last eight weeks of pregnancy.
  • Methods: Cryotherapy, electrosurgery, and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) are common treatments. Podophyllotoxin and Imiquimod are avoided during pregnancy.

Prevention and Care

  • Prevention: Use condoms to reduce the risk of transmission, though it is not completely protective.
  • Partner Examination: All sexual partners should be examined and treated if condylomata are found.
