RESTYLANE®  is a derivative of hyaluronic acid, a natural compound in the human body that keeps the skin firm. Restylane® injections provide a safe, fast and effective treatment to enhance lips, and reduce wrinkles and nasal labial folds.

This procedure produces results that can last from four to eight months. Treatment usually takes approximately 30 minutes, and there is no downtime or recovery period. Some patients choose to return to work that day
.

Looking for non-surgical advancements in facial rejuvenation? Well, look no further. With the recent introduction of a revolutionary filler known as Restylane, patients in the United States now have access to a product that has been used in Europe for several years showing great success in achieving facial rejuvenation with injections.

While there are numerous injectable fillers on the market today, many of them have their drawbacks including allergic reactions and relatively short life spans. Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic filler that is immune to these drawbacks given its unique chemical composition. In December 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Restylane for the treatment of facial wrinkles.

Additional applications of Restylane include:
Lip augmentation and/or enhancement Reducing the appearance of lines around the mouth
Modifying nasolabial folds (under the nose) and eye trough deformities

Facial contouring of the cheeks and mouth
It is important to note that while Restylane has been approved to enhance the appearance and fullness of the lips, the safety and efficacy of this application of Restylane has not been established by the FDA.

What is Restylane Made of?
Produced and marketed by a company in Sweden, Restylane is the first, and currently the only, dermal filler approved by the FDA that is made of a biodegradable hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance present in all living organisms. This natural acid provides volume and fullness to an organism’s epidermis (i.e., skin). Restylane is produced as a clear gel substance and is injected directly beneath the surface of the skin.

Through the introduction of Restylane to the treatment area, the hyaluronic-based gel adds natural volume and lift resulting in smoother wrinkles and less prominent folds. Moreover, and what distinguishes Restylane from other dermal fillers, is the way in which Restylane permeates the dermal tissue and naturally binds to water molecules. Through this action, the modified water molecules assist in achieving and maintaining volume possessing a natural appearance. Over time, Restylane is gradually degraded by the body and dissolves without any residue or trace. Restylane treatments results are immediately visible and typically last about six months. Factors such as the patient’s age, skin type, etc., will effect how long Restylane treatments results are sustained. Moreover, most patients require only one Restylane injection to obtain optimal results. Occasionally, additional treatments may be required to achieve the patient’s desired outcome.

During the consultation visit with Dr. Gary Rothfeld, Board Certified Dermatologist at NYC Dermatology, the number of required treatments will be addressed.

Side Effects of Restylane
As previously indicated, Restylane is safe and effective when treating moderate to severe wrinkles around the nose and mouth. However, as is the case with any cosmetic procedure or treatment, various side effects are possible. While infrequent, potential side effects associated with the use of Restylane include: redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness and moderate pain. In those instances where side effects are present, they typically dissipate within a few days.

Am I a Good Candidate for Restylane? There are several important factors you must consider in determining whether or not any cosmetic treatment, such as Restylane, is an appropriate procedure for you. During the consultation visit with Dr. Gary Rothfeld, it is recommended that you ask  Dr. Rothfeld at NYC Dermatologist if you feel you are a good candidate for Restylane treatments
.

In determining one’s readiness for Restylane, you should:

  • Possess realistic expectations as to what Restylane treatments can and cannot do
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be mature enough to fully understand the procedure
  • Be in relatively good physical and psychological health

How Long do The Treatments Take?
Restylane, because of its natural formula, does not require a skin test, unlike some other dermatological fillers and injectables. Regarding the time needed to perform the procedure, Restylane treatments typically require approximately 20 to 30 minutes to perform.

New York Dermatology by Board Certified  Dermatologist Dr. Gary Rothfeld  is a board certified NYC  Dermatologist with a  New York City office in Manhattan, New York  providing expert skin care, dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology services.  A Park Avenue practice with an international reputation in general, cosmetic, and surgical dermatology.

I personally see every new patient who visits our office. I am not just a physician, I am a Board Certified Dermatologist. My goal is, quite simply, to provide the type of dermatologic care which I  would seek for my own family. This is a very important point, since physicians often use the phrase "Doctor's Doctor" to refer to those individuals who typically are selected by physicians themselves for personal care. I am confident that my practice fully meets that definition. This is the type of 5-star care and service that our patients expect, deserve and receive. I treat every patient the way I would want to be treated: with courtesy, dignity and respect. I carefully listen to their hair and skin-care concerns and offer a variety of options including a treatment plan that I believe will give them the best results

Dr Gary sees every patient himself and  believes in personalized care. The Doctor does not employ any physician assistants, nurse practitioners, or other physician substitutes to do his treatment. He sees every patient himself at every visit.

A significant percentage of my  Dermatology Conditions are diagnosed  on listening to medical history of the patient alone, a further percentage on examination and the remainder on further investigation and my patients teach me the rest. It is clear to me that history and examination skills remain at the very core of my dermatology practice. Older Dermatologists like myself rely on history and physical to a greater degree than the younger dermatologists.  I think that the pendulum has swung too far towards all these cosmetic procedures where the younger dermatologists are just doing cosmetic procedures and not listening to their patients.  This is an important point because if the Dermatologist does not spend enough time with the patient the cosmetic procedures will not work.

It is vital to undergo a full pre assessment to ensure that your skin type is fully assessed and to be  accurate about your medical history. This particular procedure might not be the right treatment for you.  It is crucial that the Doctor does a full History and Physical Examination and listens to your concerns.  It very important to understand the individual needs of each patient because one procedure could work on one patient and then not another.

Each patient’s condition is carefully evaluated and the best treatment(s) are chosen to ensure an optimal outcome. Treatments are performed by Dr. Gary who has extensive cosmetic dermatology experience and training. This allows the Doctor to offer top-quality services in every area of the cosmetic dermatology field, while ensuring patients safety and satisfaction.
